Dotwork (Technique)
The technique of building images and shading from individual dots applied with the needle, without continuous lines.
As a technique (different from the dotwork style, which is its own aesthetic), dotwork can be used within any style to build texture, gradual shading and depth. The density and spacing of the dots determine whether an area looks lighter or darker — the closer the dots, the darker the region appears. It's a time-consuming technique that demands patience, since each dot is applied individually.
