Clear Communication About Consent and Design Changes

Last-minute changes and unclear design approval cause the worst client conflicts. Here is how to prevent them.

Most conflicts between artist and client do not come from technique — they come from an "I thought it would be different" moment, once the design is already on skin. This is almost always avoidable with a clear approval and consent process.

Approve the design before the session, not during it

Whenever possible, show the final design — or at least a sketch at real size and placement — before the day of the session. This gives the client time to request adjustments calmly, instead of negotiating changes with the needle already in hand.

Record the approval, don't just assume everything is fine

A quick "looks great" in a WhatsApp message is not the same as a clear, recorded approval. Ask for explicit confirmation from the client on the design before moving forward — it protects both sides if a question comes up later.

Explain what can and cannot be adjusted on the day

Small placement tweaks are usually possible on the spot. Structural changes to the design usually are not — or require redesigning and rescheduling. Make this clear in advance so the client doesn't arrive expecting a full last-minute overhaul.

Treat consent as an ongoing part of the process

Consent isn't just signing a form — it's the client understanding and agreeing to each step: the design, the exact placement, the size, and, when relevant, changes you propose during the creative process. Asking "can I adjust this here?" before changing something builds trust.

Keep a decision history per client

When you work with many clients, it is easy to lose track of who approved what. Keeping an organized history per client — designs sent, approvals and notes — prevents misunderstandings and shows professionalism if a client questions something months later.

Tattoofy's client history brings this kind of information together in one place, making it easy to revisit decisions made weeks or months before a session.
